Driving Costs

Bye Bye Truck! Bye Bye Payment!
I read an article today that made me feel a little bit better about going down to only one car. The article is titled "Driving Costs Climb to $8,776 for Car Owners". It was in the AAA magazine we get every couple of months. It basically describes how to determine how much your actual yearly cost is to own and drive your vehicle. I was completely shocked that a small car that is driven 15,000 miles a year costs the average household $8,776 a year, a mini-van like ours costs $9,489, and a 4WD SUV costs $11,239.

Boy is that staggering to think about!

We sold our truck Friday. We have been trying to sell it for several months to get out of the loan. On Friday night, I decided to sit down and really figure out how much money we are saving by owning only one, paid-for vehicle. As hard as it will be to adjust to one car, the savings was much more than I expected.

I'll be posting an entire article on that at thriftylikethat.com/drivingcosts on Wednesday.

  1. Glad you sold your truck! I know you have been trying for a while. Not having that payment will be nice!

  3. We recently paid off our van! Woo Hoo! We are now contemplating getting a 12 passenger van before we adopt our last baby. Our current van has just enough room for us, but no room for luggage when we go anywhere. It's a great feeling, to be that much closer to being debt free. And if we do buy a 12 passenger van, we will buy it outright. :0)

  5. Sorry...I guess AAA did not keep the articles up that are linked to in this post. I'll have to see if I can find it.
